Character History:
Harry was born to Lily and James Potter in a very trying time for the world. The wizarding world was at war with Voldemort and his death eaters, and things were looking pretty grim all around. James and Lily hid away in Godrics Hollow, in a place protected by the Fidelius charm, so they could raise their son in relative safety, as the dark lord had marked them for death. Unfortunately, their secret keeper, Peter Pettigrew, was working as a spy and gave their location away. Voldemort came, killed Harry's parents, and then tried to kill Harry as well, but his mother's sacrifice saved him. Her unconditional love protected him from Voldemort, and was the reason the killing curse backfired and hit Voldemort instead. It seemed like Voldemort had been defeated, but he had created horcrux's to contain parts of his soul, and so he was still technically alive. He just didn't have a physical body.
Anyway, Harry was sent to stay with his mother's sister's family, the Dursleys. The Dursley's didn't like Harry. He was a constant reminder of Lily and the wizarding world, both of which were looked down on by Petunia and Vernon. Harry was treated badly. He slept in a cupboard under the stairs, was always second to Dudley, never got presents...Given Harry's parentage, weird things would sometimes happen around him, like his hair growing or him suddenly ending up on the school roof when he tried to get away from Dudley and his crew of bullies, and whenever these things happened, he was punished by being locked in his cupboard and/or being deprived of meals. Basically, his life kind of sucked. Harry didn't know about his parents other than they supposedly died in a car crash, and he wasn't able to explain the things that happened around him.
That is until he got his Hogwarts letter, anyway. Which was an ordeal in and of itself. The Dursley's tried to keep Harry from getting his letter, by taking it away, which led to more and more letters arriving. In a desperate attempt to get control of the situation, the Dursley's took Harry away, first to a bed and breakfast, and then to a shack out on a little island off the coast. It's there that Hagrid showed up, midnight on the night Harry turned eleven. He gave Harry his letter, told him about the wizarding world and his parents, and then whisked him away the next morning to go shopping for school supplies. Along the way, Hagrid had to pick up a suspicious parcel from Gringots, which piqued Harry's curiosity, but Hagrid wouldn't say anything more than 'It's Hogwarts business.
Harry had to spend another month with the Dursley's, but it was worth it in the end because he knew he was going away somewhere great. The only problem was, once he was dropped off at the train station, he had no idea where With the help of Ron's family, he figured out how to get to Platform Nine and three quarters, where the train to Hogwarts was, and set off for his first year at school. On the train, he became fast friends with Ron, decided he didn't like Malfoy, and ate a lot of wizard snacks.
Harry was sorted into Gryffindor, which he was very happy about, and for the most part, his year started out relatively normal. He enjoyed his classes, had that one teacher that creeped him out and seemed to hate his guts (snape lookin' at you) and had an all around good time. Harry even ended up on the Qudditch team, though he hadn't even really meant to. Malfoy had taken Neville's remembrall and flown off with it. Outraged, Harry flew after him. Malfoy chucked the clear glass sphere, and Harry caught it without any difficulty, impressing Professor McGonagall.
Malfoy challenges Harry to a duel afterwards, which Harry accepts. It's a trick though, Malfoy had set them up to get caught, but Harry and Ron ( and Hermione and Neville, who end up going along without meaning to ) manage to escape, but they end up hiding in a room that had been deemed off limits. And not without reason, given there was a three headed dog in there. They realize that the dog is standing on a trap door, which makes Harry realize that that's probably where the package Hagrid picked up was.
At Halloween, a troll ends up in the school, which causes a panic. Harry and Ron end up going to save Hermione, because they're the only one's that know she's not at dinner, and is instead crying in the bathroom (It's their fault she's there, because Ron insulted her after class, without knowing she was listening.) They fight the troll as best as a couple of first years can, with Harry sticking his wand up the Troll's nose and Ron hitting it with it's club, and after everything is all said and done, Hermione ends up their friend.
After Quidditch practice one day, Snape / The Quidditch match and finding out about fluffy and Flamel
The Invisibility Cloak and the Mirror of Erised trying to find Flamel
The second Quidditch match
Norbert the Norwegian Ridgeback
Detention
Going down to find the mirror
Confronting Voldemort
No letters / Dobby / being rescued by Ron
Abilities/Special Powers:
Harry is a wizard! Which means he can do spells and the like, so long as he has his wand handy. He hasn't started his second year, yet, though, so he only really knows the basics of a lot of things, and he has a lot to learn before he can do anything complex or difficult. That being said, he's a natural flyer, and knows how to use a broomstick really well. And because a piece of Voldemort's soul got lodged in Harry's head when the dark wizard tried to kill him, he can also speak to and understand snakes.
